According to NBC Sports, Liu is the first American woman to win a world title since Sarah Hughes in 2002. The last American woman to medal at the Olympics was Sasha Cohen, who won silver in 2006. It capped off a remarkable stretch for the 20-year-old Liu, who was born in Clovis and now trains out of Oakland.
Liu won gold with a rousing routine to "MacArthur Park" by Donna Summer. Kaori Sakamoto and Ami Nakai, both of Japan, won silver and bronze.
